1. The Economic and Commercial Counselor’s Office of the Chinese Embassy in New Zealand welcomes the media statement and test results released by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs of New Zealand on 17 October. The test result shows little cause for concern about levels of formaldehyde in clothing and textiles on sale in New Zealand. This will help restore consumer confidence in the reputation of China-made garments and textiles that have been unjustifiably blackened by some less-than-balanced media reports in New Zealand.
2. This office expresses its appreciation to the New Zealand government for dealing with the quality issue of the Chinese product with a fair, reasonable and objective attitude, and for giving a responsible explanation to the general public by way of finding truth from the scientific test.
3. Thanks also go to the New Zealand Retailers’ Association, the New Zealand China Trade Association, China and New Zealand Business Council, etc, for their clear-minded judgment of the Chinese products and their great timely and considered media releases during the difficult periods.
4. This office, as the representative of the Chinese government, therefore by extension representing of Chinese manufactures and exporters, welcomes at all times balanced and fair critique in any matters that can result in a better protection regime for consumers, importers and manufactures alike.
5. China and New Zealand are enjoying excellent economic and trade relations. The two governments, on behalf their people, have good and effective cooperation mechanism to solve issues that may arise now and in the future.
6. No country can guarantee 100% satisfactory products. That is why strong and competent quality inspection system and the recall system are needed in many developed and developing countries. The Chinese government has always attached great importance to product quality and safety issues, and has taken effective measures to ensure the production of safe and qualified products.
7. More than 99% of “Made in China” products, with their competitive price and good quality, have won recognition and popularity all over the world. This is reflected by the fact that China is now the 3rd largest export country in the world. In 2006, China’s total export had reached USD969 billion. “Made in China” products are indispensable to consumers all over the world.
8. “Made in China” products are the result of international division of labor and cooperation. In terms of trade form, over 50% of China’s export is processing trade, with products made according to the requirements and standards of foreign orders. In terms of exporting entity, foreign-invested ventures account for 58% of China’s export. In this sense, “Made in China” is also “Made in World”.
